Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit is the story of Japanese American girl, who was born in an Idaho concentration camp during World War II. The first chapter of Sideways was nominated for a Pushcart Prize and published in the spring 2014 issue of The New Orphic Review. Diana Morita Cole is the recipient of a grant from the Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance. Her reading will be followed by a screening of the documentary, Kootenay Ghost Town Tour, which explores the displacement and imprisonment of Japanese Canadians. Readings of Japanese Canadian literary pieces written by Joy Kogawa and Roy Kiyooka will be included. The program concludes with a dramatic storytelling of “Delivering Telegrams in Minidoka.”

Get Lit! would like to thank the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute and the Spokane chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League for their generous sponsorship.
